The final layer of the Calontir Clothing Challenge was the accessory layer, and by the rules of the challenge one layer had to be constructed by a method other than sewing. Since my first three layers were obviously sewn, it was time to switch gears. I was running a little tight on time and wanted to ensure that I could complete the project, so I decided to focus on something that I'd tried before. I opted to make a necklace, and found a few images of women wearing a single-strand coral necklace in the late 14th to early 15th century.
Some of the images showed large red dots separated by smaller red dots. I'm not sure if this was supposed to represent a knotted cord between beads as modern pearls are strung, or if this was an alternating bead size. I decided to go with the latter because it was aesthetically pleasing to my modern eye. It's still a very simple design, but I like, and have already worn it to work with an off-the rack red and black striped shirt. I think it's cool that this piece can so easily morph from passable 15th century to 21st century.
